Is Botox an effective treatment for TMJ?
Botox for TMJ can be highly effective. One 2012 study found that Botox treatments significantly decreased pain and increased mouth movements for three months following the treatment. Another study found that symptoms improved in 90 percent of participants. BOTOX is currently not FDA approved for the treatment of TMJ disorders. However, that hasn't stopped medical or dental professionals from using it. BOTOX for TMJ is injected into the jaw muscles, forehead, and temple depending on your symptoms. A general dentist can treat their patients who have been diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder. A general dentist already understands how the jaw functions and can therefore offer patients who are suffering from TMJ pain a few different types of treatment options. As a dentist, we will use fingers to apply a bit of pressure to the jaw and TMJ to test for tenderness and pain. Also, we will look inside your mouth for signs of teeth grinding, clenching and alignment issues. We will also use X-Rays, if we find evidence of a TMJ disorder. By injecting small doses of botulinum toxin directly into the masseter muscle (the large muscle that moves the jaw), the muscle is weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. This significantly relaxes the muscle and reduces the wear and tear on the teeth due to grinding.
As a TMJ dentist, we always recommend starting with the least invasive treatment method. It is important to avoid placing any additional stress on your joints so while it may seem tempting to rush into surgical procedures – wait. Start with gently massaging your jaw muscles a couple of times per day. We can show you how to do so without irritating the area or causing a flair up. You may also want to analyze your diet to determine if any particular foods may be too difficult to chew, thereby making the problem worse. By switching to soft foods or ones that are easily pulled apart, you may start to feel better immediately.
