What to Expect During an In-Office Teeth Whitening Session

Teeth Whitening San Dimas, CA

Teeth whitening refers to the process of removing stains and lightening the shade of the enamel. It can be performed in-office at a dentist's office or at home. However, the most effective way to whiten the teeth is to visit the dentist in-office. Dentists have access to stronger products, which produce much more promising and long-lasting results.

For the most part, teeth whitening in-office is pretty straightforward. However, for those who have never undergone the procedure, it may be helpful to become familiar with what to expect.

Expectations for in-office teeth whitening

Outlined below are a few things that patients can expect during a teeth whitening session that is done in-office. Reviewing this information prior to an appointment can be helpful in preparing appropriately.

#1. A thorough cleaning

To start a teeth whitening session, the dentist will either perform a cleaning or bring in a hygienist to do so. The teeth need to be thoroughly cleaned in order for the whitening solution to properly do its job. Patients can expect the cleaning to be quick. The purpose is to remove any debris from the teeth or from in between one another.

#2. Drying

In order for teeth whitening to be effective, the surface has to be fully dry. Otherwise, the solution will not stick nor absorb into the enamel. With that being said, after the teeth are cleaned, the dentist will dry the teeth using cotton. The cotton will absorb any saliva that has stuck to the surface. This part of the process may take a couple of minutes in order for efficiency.

#3. Application

The application of the whitening solution is the longest part of the procedure and patients are required to stay still with the oral cavity open. To start, patients should expect to have their gums covered so that they remain protected. Next, the dentist will carefully place a hydrogen peroxide-based solution all over the surface of the teeth. A brush will be used to spread it out evenly, ensuring that all of the front surfaces are covered.

#4. Finishing touches

Finally, patients undergoing teeth whitening in-office should expect to have to sit for a few minutes. During this time, the dentist will use a bright UV light to cure and harden the whitening solution. This process takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes, depending on the results that are desired.

What to expect afterward

After an in-office teeth whitening session is complete, patients should expect to have some slight sensitivity that will subside within a day or so. It is recommended to avoid drinking or eating for a couple of hours to let the solutions fully sink into the enamel. Long-term, the dentist may suggest a follow-up teeth whitening session to maintain the results.

To find out more about any type of teeth whitening, it is best to consult directly with the dentist. Reach out today to ask questions or to go over any concerns about the process.
