What Happens During a Dental Filling Procedure?

If you have a cavity in one of your teeth, you may need a dental filling. This is a very common dental procedure. However, if you have never had one before, you may be wondering what it is like. Keep reading to learn what to expect when having one of your teeth filled.

What is a cavity?

A cavity is a hole in the tooth after part of the tooth has been destroyed because of decay. The cavity still has the bacteria that caused the hole. This means that the bacteria are still eating away at the interior of the tooth. Without a dental filling, the decay will keep spreading, damaging the patient’s tooth.

The filling procedure is designed to remove the decay from the cavity. A drill will be used for this. Removing the decay does not fix the damage. This is why the tooth will be filled with a substance, or a filling.

Many dentists use composite resin for a filing. However, the silver amalgam is still popular as well. Fillings can replace the pulp inside the tooth. The dentist will work to match the color to the rest of the teeth. Then the filling will be molded to match the rest of the teeth.

How a filling is inserted

First, the dentist will numb the area around the affected tooth. The local anesthetic will be injected into the gums around the area. This anesthetic will also numb the patient’s gums and jawbone. When the dentist has tested the area to see if it is numb, the dental drill will remove the decay. In some cases, a laser will be used instead.

Once the dentist has removed the decay, it is time for the filling. The method will depend on the type of filling. The two most common are composite resin and amalgam fillings. The dentist can help the patient decide which type of filling to choose.

Composite resin

This filling can last up to 15 years. It is placed in layers to completely fill the cavity. Once each layer has been placed and formed into the right shape, it will be cured. Ultraviolet light will be used to harden the material into place. This is known as photo-polymerization. This is faster than waiting for the resin to harden on its own.

Silver amalgam

A silver amalgam dental filling first needs to be mixed using a machine. The amalgam will be compacted tightly into the cavity. This will prevent there being any air. Then, it will be carved into shape to match the tooth’s contours. The dentist will check to see that the patient’s bite is correct before finishing.
