Pros and Cons of Implant Dentures

Implant dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth. These prosthetics are a lot like the traditional version, but, instead of being held in place via suction, the device is attached to implants. This results in a significantly more stable fit, which eliminates the slipping conventional dentures are known for.

There are two main types of implant dentures used by dentists. Bar-retained or snap-on dentures are attached to a bar that is fixed on implants. They provide a comfortable fit and allow the patient to use their prosthetic teeth without having to worry about it slipping or falling out. This means they get to enjoy a wider range of foods and they are more confident when they smile.

Screw retained dentures are attached to implants via metal screws, and they are a permanent solution. The device cannot be taken out without the assistance of the dentist. This eliminates the tiring cleaning requirements of traditional dentures which usually involves cleaning it with a brush and soaking it in denture solution overnight. With screw-retained dentures, the patient simply needs to practice good oral hygiene.

What to expect when getting implant dentures

Getting fitted with implant dentures requires oral surgery. The entire process can take up to six months before the patient has a set of teeth they can use to enjoy all their favorite dishes. The implants are small metal cylinders that are inserted into the person's jaw. Four to six implants are usually used for either half of the jaw.

Over the next six months after the installation, these metal cylinders will fuse with surrounding bone tissue, firmly embedding them in place. The patient will typically have to wear temporary dentures during this period. These are called immediate dentures.

During the second surgery, the dentist will attach connectors to the implants. The patient will be given up to two weeks to heal from that procedure before implants are fitted to the attachments.

Depending on the patient's unique dental health, the dentist might decide to complete the entire process during a single surgery.

Benefits and disadvantages of implant-supported dentures

Implant dentures come with a range of benefits like:

• Improved stability over conventional implants
• The patient gets dentures that are less likely to cause sores
• It helps to maintain the patient's jawbone density
• It allows the patient to confidently use their artificial teeth
• It makes it easier to chew and speak
• Implants last a lifetime with good oral hygiene. That means the patient most likely will never have to go through implant installation again

The disadvantages of implant-supported dentures include:

• The implants need to be surgically installed. This might not be an option for people with chronic conditions like diabetes
• Implant-supported dentures cost more than conventional implants
• The dentures attached to the implants still need to be replaced as often as conventional dentures. This is usually around every five to ten years
